State Farm and ShopriteHi Everyone!
I'm finally finding the time to sit down and fill you in on what's been going on with me the past couple of weeks. Wouldn't you know it, the reason I am finding some time is that I am sitting in the locker room at Locust Hill in Rochester in a rain delay. Not happy about the delay but happy I have some time to get you all up to speed.
So the past two weeks have been pretty good out on the road. I started this three week road swing in Springfield, IL for the State Farm Classic. The week went pretty well. I had my coach Ian Triggs in town for the week. We did a lot of good work early in the week so I went into the first round feeling pretty good. Through the first two rounds, I played well in patches but wasn't able to finish off my rounds the way I would have liked. So that put me in the middle of the pack going into the weekend. Finally on Saturday, things started clicking and I put together a pretty solid weekend. Shooting 12 under over the final two rounds ended up moving me up to T11. Obviously I would have liked to have put myself in with more of a chance to win but I felt good about how my game came together.
The following Monday, I participated in the Life Event, which is a charity breast cancer pro-am hosted by former LPGA player Val Skinner. I have played in the event every year for as long as I can remember. The day raises a huge amount of money for breast cancer research and also to promote the Young Women's Initiative which is helping raise awareness of breast cancer in young women. It's an extremely inspirational and emotional day. This year I was fortunate enough to play with a very courageous woman named Christy Bartlett. She has been fighting cancer for 18 years. She was originally diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 24 and has been taking on the battle ever since. Christy is a big fan of golf and the LPGA and I know that she had a great day with all of us, but I have to say I think I got more out of meeting and playing with her that day. She has such a great outlook on life and living each day to the fullest. Meeting someone like Christy can really put a lot of things into perspective. On days like this, I feel great that I play a sport that can give back to people like Christy and also to charities like Susan G Komen for the Cure and the Cancer Institute of New Jersey.
So after a very emotional day, I headed down to Atlantic City to get ready for last week's Shoprite LPGA Classic. The Seaview Resort Course is a definite classic seaside course. I was glad to see that we were back there after a 3 year hiatus. My preparation for the week went really well and I felt good going into Friday's first round. Things didn't go as well as I would have liked during the first two rounds though. My game was very up and down and not consistent enough for me to shoot low enough rounds to be in contention on Sunday. Sunday's round though, was a breath of fresh air and I played with a lot more freedom and the consistency that I was looking for. I shot 7 under and that was good enough to sneak up to T8.
So the past two weeks have produced a couple of fairly decent results. I am happy for the most part with my game and I feel things are really close. We are in Rochester, NY this week for the LPGA Championship, our second major of the year. I am hoping to refine a few things in the next couple of days so I can come out full of confidence on Thursday. The key for me this week will be to sustain the good mental focus throughout the round and to be as patient as possible. I think if I control those two aspects, I will be in good position on Sunday. Let's see if I can go do it!!!
Take care,
Karrie
