US OpenHi Everyone
Well I'm home in Florida and recovering from a long brutal week at the US Open. I'm both mentally and physically wiped. I think I generally feel this way after every US Open but this past week at Oakmont took a lot out of me.
To start with, from Monday till the finish of the first round on Thursday it was extremely hot and humid! In the mid 90's everyday! I'm not sure I've ever sweat so much as I did those first four days. It was a challenge through the practice rounds to learn as much as possible about this difficult course we were about to face and trying to conserve energy so that we were sharp for the tournament rounds. Even though it was a tough few days to prepare, I actually felt pretty good about things going into Thursday.
I woke up early Thursday morning to get ready for the first round. As always at the US Open, I was a little nervous and uptight during my warm up. I love the US Open and I think my expectations along with the challenge the course presents gets the blood pumping a little more. Unfortunately I wasn't really able to feel comfortable during the first round and I probably did well to shoot 3 over. Even though the next 3 rounds I felt better on the course I was never able to regain the good feels I had going during practice. My 2nd round was rained out which meant a marathon day on Saturday. I actually played 36 holes on Saturday and was in the last group to finish on 18 that night around 9pm!! I can't remember the last time I have played 36 holes in a day, let alone at Oakmont! Needless to say I was completely exhausted that night. There was definitely no problem sleeping! I still had a chance to do something special on Sunday, but unfortunately it wasn't meant to be. Overall I think I hung in there pretty well considering I really wasn't happy with any part of my game but I'm pretty disappointed all the same as I know I could have played better and contended.
A bright spot for me over the week was having Stacey and Jess, the two Karrie Webb Series winners, around for the week. Steph Na who was one of the winners a couple of years ago also came and stayed with us over the weekend. Their excitement and enthusiasm were great. They definitely got into it, dressing up in Aussie colors and didn't miss a shot over the 4 days. It really makes the week for me. I love having them around and I hope by them being at a US Open it inspires them to be there playing one day. My only regret is that I wish I could have played better for them.
So it's a short week off for me this week. I head over to Evian, France on Saturday for the Evian Masters followed by the British Open the following week. I am looking forward to this trip. I love both tournaments and love being in that part of the world for awhile. A short week means that I won't be doing a whole lot this week. Lots of sleep and a little practice before I leave is about it. Hopefully get things going and come closer to my full potential.
Take care,
Karrie
